The recent monsoon rains have also affected the ancient annual donkey festival in Sindh.
The festival is held in the Tando Ghulam Ali area of Badin District and is attended by traders from Sindh as well as across the country. This market is considered one of the largest donkey markets in Asia.
However, there is a tradition that this festival started about two hundred years ago during the Talpur period. At that time, on the occasion of Ashura, people from far-flung areas used to come to see the condolences which were very popular. Since donkeys were also a means of transportation for the people at that time, on their return, a donkey market began to appear in the area, which still exists today.
